It operates on fixed-size blocks of 128 bits using a key length of 256 bits. The algorithm is based on the substitution-permutation network structure, which ensures both confusion and diffusion properties necessary for strong cryptographic security.
Key Features
- Block Size: 128 bits
- Key Size: 256 bits
- Structure: Substitution-Permutation Network
- Mode of Operation: Counter (CTR) mode
Encryption Process
The encryption process in ARIA-256-CTR begins by generating a series of unique counter values, which are combined with the encryption key. Each counter value is encrypted using the ARIA-256 block cipher to produce a key stream block. This key stream block is then XORed with the plaintext block to produce the ciphertext. The counter is incremented for each subsequent block to ensure that the key stream remains unique for every block of plaintext.
Decryption Process
Decryption follows the same procedure as encryption due to the properties of the XOR operation. The ciphertext block is XORed with the same key stream block generated during encryption, producing the original plaintext. This method allows parallel processing since each block’s encryption is independent, improving performance in high-throughput environments.
Key Schedule
ARIA-256 employs a key schedule that expands the 256-bit key into multiple round keys used throughout the encryption and decryption processes. The schedule applies a combination of nonlinear transformations, rotations, and XOR operations to produce subkeys that provide resistance against linear and differential cryptanalysis.
Security Considerations
The use of CTR mode with ARIA-256 ensures that identical plaintext blocks produce different ciphertext blocks due to the unique counter values. The algorithm provides strong protection against known cryptographic attacks when implemented correctly and supports hardware and software optimizations for efficient encryption and decryption.
