The AES-128-CCM algorithm is a symmetric key cryptographic technique combining the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with Counter with CBC-MAC (CCM) mode. It provides both confidentiality and integrity for digital data. AES-128 uses a 128-bit key to encrypt blocks of 128 bits. The CCM mode integrates counter mode (CTR) for encryption and Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication Code (CBC-MAC) for authentication. This structure ensures that each message is both encrypted and authenticated, preventing unauthorized modifications.

Key Features

  • Symmetric encryption using a 128-bit key
  • Authenticated encryption combining encryption and integrity checks
  • Counter mode provides unique keystreams for each block
  • CBC-MAC calculates a message authentication code over the plaintext
  • Supports variable-length nonces to prevent replay attacks

Operation Steps

  1. Input preparation: The plaintext message and associated data are provided along with a 128-bit key and a nonce.
  2. MAC generation: CBC-MAC processes the plaintext and associated data to create a tag that ensures integrity.
  3. Encryption: Counter mode encrypts the plaintext and the generated MAC tag using AES-128.
  4. Output assembly: The resulting ciphertext is combined with the authentication tag for transmission.
  5. Verification: On reception, the recipient uses the same key and nonce to decrypt the ciphertext and verify the MAC tag, confirming both confidentiality and integrity.

Security Considerations

AES-128-CCM provides strong protection against both eavesdropping and tampering when used with unique nonces for each message. Reusing nonces undermines security by enabling potential attacks on confidentiality and integrity. Proper key management, secure generation of nonces, and adherence to cryptographic standards are essential for maintaining the security guarantees of AES-128-CCM.
